Great Mall of the Bay Area is one of the largest adaptive re-use projects of its kind. It involved the conversion of a former Ford Motor Company assembly plant into a super-regional shopping and entertainment center situated on 110 acres within the heart of the Silicon Valley. Great Mall is a total of 1.3 million square feet with over 200 retail shops and restaurants. The initial transportation-oriented design theme was created to commemorate the site’s historic past. The complexity and scope of the Great Mall project provided many development and operational challenges to achieve its successful completion. As shown, Great Mall was developed in two phases, the initial construction and its subsequent expansion into more entertainment oriented uses.
